After composing an impressive resume that makes you look like a super prospect, it is hard not to expect employers to knock your door down trying to be the first with a job offer. The problem is that nearly every other job seeker on the market has done the same thing. Let’s not forget that resumes are like press releases. It is best not to take them too seriously. A good resume does not make you a better person or employment prospect.
Now that your balloon has been deflated just a little, the opposite side of the story needs to be told. If you are seeking job in a field that you have training and experience, your odds may be very good that someone will at least want to call you in for an interview. Most employers are looking for more than talent. They want someone who will fit into their employee mix without creating waves.
This means that if you have the right personality and personal appearance, you could have a leg up on a more qualified candidate. If you have the personality of a walnut, you will need outstanding credentials to get beyond the first interview. So, when discussing realism, these factors have to be considered.
Plan on at least a month to locate a new position. If you are currently employed and can afford to be picky about opportunities, add on more time. By the time that you get your resume ready, locate prospective employers, and get the resume into their hands, two or more weeks could easily have passed. Frequently, the interview process can drag on for an additional two weeks in the best circumstances.
For positions in more prestigious companies, the decision making process can be quite slow. These companies are looking for long-term employees that can grow as the company grows. Interviews for a job as a packing clerk in a factory may go quickly because the company figures if you do not work out, they will just stand up someone else in your place and keep running.
Either way, some time will pass before job offers come rolling in. Learning to interview can take a little time, also. Interviewers develop new questions from time to time trying to enhance their ability to find the best job candidate. If you have not interviewed for a few years, it can require several interviews before you become comfortable with the questions and learn the desired answers.
If you know others who have just been through successful job searches, your learning curve can be shortened. Find out what questions are being asked and listen to the answers that were used to gain the position. This could help you land a new job weeks sooner.
We all have heard stories of people who have found jobs with fabulous benefits and salaries. These jobs are the exception and not the rule. When looking for a job, learn what types of salary and benefit packages are being offered for your position. This will help if an offer is made. You will already know if this is a bad or good offer. If you have several interviews, wait on accepting a position until they can be completed. Most companies will give you a few days or longer to decide.
If you are made an outstanding offer, try not to be greedy. You do not want to miss a great job trying to get the very best money available. If you know that the offer is in the top 20% of the range, you will not be likely to top it appreciably by waiting.
